This session will present the most interesting issues about the functional role, regulation and pharmacology of the mitochondrial transporting proteins, with a special focus on ion channels. Mitochondria play a fundamental role in ATP synthesis within the majority of mammalian cells, and are the only cellular organelle with a very high membrane potential (around 200 mV), due to respiratory chain activity, with negative polarization of the mitochondrial interior (matrix). The primary function of the mitochondrial channels is regulation of the mitochondrial membrane potential. Additionally, mitochondrial channels alter cellular respiration, regulation of the mitochondrial volume and synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with signalling roles
